Today, I found that the age people are considered as adult is different between Japan and the US.

In Japan, 20-year-old is considered as the age of adult. People who are older than 20 years old are allowed to drink alcohol according to the national law. Also, we have a big ceremony called "Seijin shiki". It means “Coming of age ceremony”. Girls wear Furisode, a kind of Kimono and boys wear Hakama.

I took the profile picture (below) when I turned 20 years old. Actually, I couldn’t attend the ceremony because I was in the US as an exchange student so I took it before I left Japan.

The ceremony is held on the second Monday in January every year. People meet up in the closest venue from their home and attend the official ceremony held by city. After the ceremony, people usually go to middle school or high school where they used to go to have a reunion party. People drink and share the memory till late at night.

その後通っていた中学か高校の同窓会に行きます。
そこで、夜遅くまで昔の思い出話をしたり、お酒を飲んだりします。

If you go to Japan on that day, you’ll see many people wearing Kimono. It’s pretty unique culture, but some other countries also have tradition to celebrate coming of age day.

In most of the countries, people dress up and celebrate the adulthood. However, there are some countries which have more unique way to celebrate the coming of age.
