Is Japan weird?

If you go to Japan, you’ll see a lot of people wearing surgical mask. It’s so weird culture, but there are some reasons!

日本に行くとマスクを着けている人をたくさん見かけると思います。

少し変な文化ですが、いくつか理由があるんです！

For the first reason, people wear surgical mask when they are sick. This is kind of manner to wear surgical mask when you are sick so that others don’t be infected. Also, when you cough or sneeze, people in the US usually use their  shoulder to hide their mouth. However, in Japan, people hide their mouth with their hands, which is a little dirty. If you touch other stuff with your hands used for hiding your mouth when you cough or sneeze, you might spread virus that you have on those stuff. So, I prefer American culture at this point.

まず、日本人は体調が悪い時にマスクを着けます。

他の人に感染しないようにマスクをするのが日本ではマナーとなっています。

また、くしゃみや咳をするときアメリカでは肩で口をふさぎますが、日本では手で口をふさぎます。もし、くしゃみや咳をした手で他のものに触れると持っている菌を広めてしまうかもしまうので、私はこの点ではアメリカの文化が優れていると思います。

For the second reason, people try to hide their face with surgical mask, especially girls. When girls aren’t wearing makeup, they tend to wear surgical mask to hide their face. I used to do that in Japan.

第二の理由として、特に女性が顔を隠す際にマスクを使うことがあります。

女性が化粧をしていないとき、マスクで顔を隠すという傾向があります。

(私も日本にいたときにしていました笑)

For the third reason, if you use surgical mask, you can keep warmth on your face. Especially In northern part of Japan, it’s really cold. It snows a lot and the temperature falls below freezing. To protect themselves from the cold, people use surgical mask. It can cover the most part of your face and warm the part with your breathe.

三つ目の理由に、日本人は顔の温かさを保持するためにマスクを使います。

特に日本の北部はとても寒いです。沢山の雪が降り、気温は氷点下まで下がります。

その寒さから身を守るために、マスクを使います。

顔の大部分を隠せるだけでなく、自分の呼気でさらに温めることもできますよね！

For the last reason, in spring and fall, there’s a lot of pollen in the air in Japan so people wear surgical mask to prevent them from hay fever.  I’ve heard  that hay fever is caused by breathing in a lot of pollen. Also, many people already have hay fever which causes sneezing, coughing and running nose. It doesn’t infect to others, but people use surgical mask for etiquette.

最後の理由として、日本では春と秋に沢山の花粉が舞うので、

花粉症防止のためにマスクを使う人も多いです。

花粉症は花粉を多量に吸い込むことで引き起こされると聞いたことがあります。

さらに、多くの人が既にくしゃみや咳、鼻水などを引き起こす花粉症にかかっています。これはほかの人に感染することはありませんが、日本人はエチケットとしてマスクを着けます。

I was really surprised when I first came here. I’ve never seen people wearing surgical mask in the US so far! Moreover, I felt weird when I saw people wearing surgical mask in Japan during winter break because I got used to American culture.

ここ（アメリカ）に初めて来たときは非常に驚きました。

今のところアメリカでマスクを着けている人を見たことはありません。

ですが、アメリカの文化に慣れたせいか、冬休みに日本に帰った際にはマスクを着けている人を見たとき、違和感を覚えました。
